Townsman: [talking about Marjorie Nugent] She’d kick your ass in a heartbeat
In a small Texas town, a nice mortician befriends a wealthy widow, but when she starts taking over, he does everything he can to escape her clutches. The film features commentary from real-life residents of Carthage, Texas, who knew the real Bernie Tiede and Marjorie Nugent. Bernie committed murder in 1996, but immediately after the murder, he reaches for his iPhone. I mean, she’d give you a brand new ass with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, double-wide. No problem. The credits are preceded by photos of the real Bernie and Marjorie, and a short clip of Bernie Tiede talking to Jack Black.
Love Lifted Me Written by James Rowe and Howard E
According to the link to the film’s specs, there are two different versions of this film: one is 1 hour 39 minutes (99 minutes) long, and the other is 1 hour 44 minutes (104 minutes) long (US). Appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno: Jack Black/Meatball Shop Guys in New York/Beirut (2012). Smith Presented by The Florida Boys Courtesy of World Entertainment In association with Warner Music Group Film & Television Licensing. Bernie (2011) Don’t you hate it when you watch a funny movie and at the end you think, wow, that could have been so much funnier? This movie is really funny, and Jack Black is kind of brilliant in the role of a man who has incredible generosity and quirky social skills that make him everyone’s favorite. And who ends up taking care of the richest woman in town, putting his name in her will, and so on, as you can imagine.
That’s a given
To make the jokes come across and give a sense of documentary reality, interview clips of all sorts of colorful locals are shown, making these some of the funniest moments. There’s a welcome sense of familiarity when the same people are shown over and over again—an update on events from a familiar face—but also a sense of familiarity with the film. And that’s an important part of the film, with thirty talking heads, so naturally the momentum of the main plot is often slowed down. As the events become more extreme, the film doesn’t. The action moves slowly, relying on great, idiosyncratic acting and the strange (and campy?) culture of East Texas. But Black fits into the character so well that it’s scary.
Things done well
The other big name (biggest name) is Shirley MacLaine, who doesn’t really have much to do (she’s mostly silent, or just menacing, or stern). And of course, she can’t make it through the entire film (the trailer and trailer give a lot of that away). The third name is Matthew McConaughey, and he’s predictably funny and entertaining, though he gets mixed in with a bunch of other unfamiliar characters who are also funny and entertaining. So it’s the setting and the funny writing that make the day. Writer-director Richard Linklater is an interesting talent, a bit of a jack-of-all-trades but good at a lot of things, including simply being eccentric enough to come across as the maverick director he once was. His pair of films Before Sunrise and Before Sunset are becoming unlikely classics (I really like both), yet he’s also known for smaller comedies like Young, Wild and Wild and now this.
Yes, watch it for the laughs
The beginning will feel like a bad episode of Six Feet Under, but keep going. Black’s character is completely convincing and funny. Good times.
